Description: There has been a strong focus on council’s use and processes around Glyphosate herbicides, from both the staff, community and management. Roundup and other Glyphosate products are still considered safe for use by the Australian Pest and Veterinary Medical Association (APVMA) however there has been much media attention over the past 12 months around the risks associated with glyphosate products. A Herbicide (Glyphosate) Working Group was initiated in 2018 with key stakeholders from a number of branches representing the group. The group was initiated to discuss and progress how we could improve council’s process of herbicide management from a strategic and operational level and ensure that council meets its duty of care to for both staff, community and the environment. A group Charter (attached) has been established andyou are invited to have a read to understand the objectives of the group. Over the last few months a number of recommendations were presented to the Health & Safety Steering Committee and endorsed. One of the recommendations will require changes to the way we currently manage weeds within playgrounds and shopping precinct areas which is: ACTION: All council and contractor staff to cease spraying Glyphosate within 10m of playgrounds and within shopping precincts.
